The Doctor's history is intertwined in the history of the universe, and the history of mankind. Born (twice, incidentally) on the planet Gallifrey outside of the Milky Way Galaxy the Doctor is a Time Lord, a member of the aristocratic class on Gallifrey. Time Lords have two hearts and extended life spans. In addition to an already long life, Time Lords have within them nannites which allow for the complete regeneration of the body in times of near death. This gives Time Lords not just one extremely long life, but twelve. The regeneration process changes physical appearance and surface level personality, but the Time Lord remains the same person. The Doctor's early history is complex and paradoxical. In very short, and omitting a great deal of confusing history that The Doctor himself would have some difficulty remembering the whole of, the Doctor became an outcast during his first generation, taking with him his granddaughter, Susan, and a 'borrowed' timeship named the TARDIS. The reasons for his departure change depending on when, and who is asked. He was bored and unsatisfied with the attitude of the Time Lords, and his decision to 'go it alone' was driven in large part by political dissent. From this point on the Doctor, in his first generation an old man having already lived a long life, is nearly a constant wanderer, and rarely alone--picking up companions along the way who unavoidably leave, if only because their lives are so much shorter than his own. His companions range from Barbara and Ian the school teachers, Jamie the kilt wearing Scotsman, Romana a Time Lord and future President of Gallifrey, tin dogs, alien life forms and eventually Rose Tyler (and later Martha Jones, but we're more concerned with Rose at this point). At the end of his second lifespan, the Time Lords bring the Doctor to account for his rogue status, and exile him to earth. He is also forced to regenerate. The exile lasts for three years, broken only by failed attempts to escape, and missions on behalf of the Time Lords. On earth, the Doctor becomes involved with the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce, or UNIT, as chief scientific advisor. During this time the Doctor makes many in-roads into human government and intelligence agencies that he makes full use of in later regenerations. Throughout this exile, the Doctor battles a nemesis, a rival Time Lord who has named himself the Master. The Doctor and the Master were once good friends and classmates (back then, the Master was named Koschei and had not yet titled himself). The Master is a persistent rival of the doctor from this point on, troubling the Doctor long after the end of his exile. Other nemesis of the Doctor include Daleks--genetically engineered creatures in robot shell, Cybermen--modified humans from an alternative earth (created independently on two different alternative Earths, no less), reptilian Ice Warriors from Mars, and all forms of alien creatures, intelligences, and even fictional entities consisting only of ideas. During his many lives the Doctor does many things, even for a short time serving as the President of Gallifrey himself. He faces many enemies, meets many famous figures, is present points in the history of Earth, and generally watches as the universe and time itself changes and passes by. Regarding his enemies, the Daleks, above all, are a particularly persistent. Being capable of time travel, they draw the attention of the Time Lords, and conflict between the two races escalates through the Doctor's regenerations. The first skirmishes of the Great Time War between the Time Lords and the Daleks can even be said to have occurred during the Doctor's fourth incarnation--it is during this lifespan that the Doctor is sent by the Time Lords in an attempt to prevent the Daleks from even forming as a malicious race. The conflict escalates, turning into full blown war towards the end of the Doctor's seventh life, and reaching bloody climax during his eighth. In order to stop the war, and save countless lives and perhaps all of existence, the Doctor watches as both races, Dalek and Time Lord, are completely (nearly) wiped from existence. The Doctor becomes the sole survivor, alone. Shortly after regenerating into his 9th form, the Doctor meets a young girl named Rose Tyler. With Rose, the Doctor slowly develops an openly deeper emotional relationship than he has allowed himself with his other companions. Over his life spans he has become less merciful, but apparently more open to express love, although he resists using the words until the very end. With Rose, the Doctor discovers that there have been Dalek survivors. A single Dalek in the private collection of a billionaire (who commits suicide after learning its DNA is tainted), the Dalek Emperor himself (destroyed by Rose Tyler with the power of the time vortex), and the Cult of Skaro who escaped the war by hiding in the void between dimensions. During the conflict with the Dalek Emporer, Rose Tyler gazes into, and absorbs the time vortex, giving her (briefly) godlike vision and power. She can see the whole of the time continuum, and change it. She uses this power to defeat the Daleks, and bring Jack Harkness back to life. This experience brings Rose and the Doctor closer together. They have shared something incredibly deep--the perspective given by the time vortex, and from this point on, the Doctor feels a deeper relation to her. The vortex is too much for a human body to handle, however. The Doctor uses his own body to absorb the power of the vortex, and then transfer it back into the TARDIS. Although this act reversed any negative physical effects on Rose, it brought those same effects onto the Doctor, and starts his regeneration cycle. In front of Rose, and to her disbelief, the Doctor regenerates into his tenth and current form. The battle with the Cult of Skaro is the last adventure of Rose Tyler with the Doctor. The void ship of the Daleks opens a breach between dimensions, a gateway to a parallel world, the same world that spawned the second generation of Cybermen. The Cybermen invade using the breach, and the four Daleks of the Cult of Skaro emerge from their void ship. Ultimately, all are sucked into the void between the dimensions for good, but the Cult of Skaro escape, and Rose Tyler is stranded in the other world, with no way back. A relatively short time after losing Rose, the Doctor picks up another companion in Martha Jones. The two develop a friendship and understanding while they explore time and space, fight the Cult of Skaro, and meet Shakespeare. However, Martha Jones never receives the affection from the Doctor that he holds for Rose, and is constantly in her shadow. Incidentally, the Doctor is not the absolute last surviving Time Lord at this time. His rival, the Master, is still alive. The Doctor finds the Master hiding near the end of the universe, and inadvertently frees him from a self-imposed prison. As a result, the Master is able to effectively invade and conquer Earth under the guise of Mr. Saxon. Ultimately, the Master is defeated, and since he conquered the Earth with the aid of a generated Paradox, his conquest is negated from the time line, and never happened at all as far as the world is concerned. ....... Most Importantly.... The Doctor has done a lot of things, and lived a long life spanning over 900 years. He is lonely as the last Time Lord, and carries the weight of guilt and responsibility. The great bulk of this history the Doctor hides behind a care free, always moving personality. Very few people touch the man underneath. His actions are sometimes the stuff of gods, but the Doctor is content to be as human, humble, and childlike. In his travels sometime after the end of this history, the Doctor's TARDIS materializes on the grounds of a school..
